Heraklion and Knossos: the old town, the harbour, the museums and the palace

Heraklion is the largest city of Crete and the island's economic and commercial centre, a working port where a Venetian old town, the Koules sea fortress, the lion fountain of Lions Square and pedestrian shopping streets sit a short walk from the ferries. Its Archaeological Museum holds what the Ministry of Culture calls the most significant collection of Minoan antiquities in the world, and the Palace of Knossos, one of the six Minoan Palatial Centres inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025, lies just south of the city.

minoan.gr mygreecetours.org archaeologicalmuseums.culture.gov.gr whc.unesco.org whc.unesco.org

Heraklion is the main city of the Heraklion regional unit (the Ministry of Culture pages say Prefecture of Iraklio). The Ministry page gives Knossos its own postcode (71409 Knosos); third party guides put the palace about 5 km south of the centre. Cretaquarium stands at the former American base of Gournes, east of the city along the coast; third party guides place Gournes in the Hersonissos area (not checked on an official municipal page).

Getting there

Air

Greek state airport listed by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA)

Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis (code HER) is the air gateway to central Crete, listed among the airports on the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority's site; the Ministry of Culture's access note for Koules simply says to come by plane from various cities or by boat from Athens. A new Heraklion International Airport is being built at Kastelli, and its company's site says trial flights will begin in 2027; until then the company directs questions on the operation of the current airport to the Hellenic Aviation Service Provider. Third party airport guides put the bus ride into the centre at about 20 minutes. hcaa.gr iahc.gr odysseus.culture.gr heraklion-her-international-airport.com heraklion-airport.info

Sight

Venetian walls and the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis

The Venetian walls that ringed the old town can be walked in parts. On the Martinengo Bastion, which Visit Heraklion calls the highest point of the walls, lies the grave of Nikos Kazantzakis, born in Heraklion on 18 February 1883 and buried here at his own request: a simple tomb with a large wooden cross and his epitaph 'I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free.' The bastion is one of the few places with a panoramic view over the whole city. Free; no official hours page found.

Sight

Old town walk: Lions Square, the Morosini fountain, 1866 Street and Agios Minas

Lions Square, officially Eleftheriou Venizelou Square, is the heart of the city, named for the four lions of the Venetian Morosini fountain; the Basilica of San Marco on the square hosts exhibitions, and arches of the Ducal Palace survive nearby. From the Meidani crossroads the central market of 1866 Street runs to Kornarou Square and the Bembo fountain, with fruit and vegetables, herbs, cheese and meat, and fishmongers on Karterou Street. A few minutes away, the cathedral of Agios Minas, the city's patron saint, was begun in 1862 to plans by Athanasios Moussis, halted by the Cretan revolution of 1866, resumed in 1883 and inaugurated in 1895; the small church of 1735 in front of it is the first Agios Minas. The saint's feast on 11 November is a public holiday for the city, and Visit Heraklion says the cathedral is open to the public throughout the day.

What we could not verify

  • Archaeological Museum hours from 1 November 2026: the museum's page shows its summer season only to 31 October 2026. Last winter it opened 08:00 to 18:00 (Wednesday 13:00 to 18:00) in November 2025 and 08:30 to 15:30 (Wednesday 10:00 to 17:00) from December 2025 to March 2026 (Ministry museums directory and the museum page). Confirm the new winter schedule before publishing.
  • Winter free Sundays: the Ministry's Odysseus page for the Archaeological Museum and the Hellenic Heritage pages for Koules and Knossos say the first and third Sunday from 1 November to 31 March; the Ministry's museums directory says every first Sunday from November to March; the Odysseus pages for Knossos and Koules list no winter Sundays at all. Not printed as fact.
  • Knossos winter hours and closures: the Ministry's Odysseus page gives 08:30 to 17:00 from 1 November (last admission 16:45, so 15 minutes before closing, and also 18:15 and 17:45 in October), while Hellenic Heritage gives 08:00 to 17:00 from 1 November to 31 March and last admission 20 minutes before closing. Odysseus also lists Knossos closed on 15 August, which Hellenic Heritage does not. Not printed.
  • Koules hours for October 2026: the Ministry page and the fort's own site give Wednesday to Monday 08:00 to 18:30 (1 to 15 October) and 08:00 to 18:00 (16 to 31 October); Hellenic Heritage gives Monday 08:00 to 18:00 and Wednesday to Sunday 08:00 to 20:00 for 1 April to 31 October. Not printed.
  • Cretaquarium prices: cretaquarium.gr gives 15 euros general entrance (1 April to 31 October), 8 euros for ages 5 to 17 and over 65, free under 5; the older HCMR site cretaquarium.her.hcmr.gr gives 12 euros and 6 euros. Not printed; winter prices not shown on either page.
  • Combined ticket for the Archaeological Museum and Knossos: the Ministry says it is no longer valid, while a ticket agency site (source h42, not official) advertises a new bundle ticket and 08:00 to 18:30 for the whole of April to October. Follow the Ministry.
  • Airport bus fare, frequency and hours: third party guides disagree (about 1.20 euros; 1.30 euros bought in advance or 2.30 euros on board; 1.60 or 2.50 euros; every 5, 10 or 10 to 15 minutes; from 05:30 or 06:00 until 23:00 or 00:30). The operator's ticket page was not opened.
  • Airport operator and passenger website: no passenger site for the current airport was found; the HCAA page looks old (statistics to 2018), and the new airport company points to Hellenic Aviation Service Provider addresses for operations. Who runs the airport day to day is not fully confirmed; third party sites (for example aeroportheraklion.fr, 4 km from the centre) were not used as fact.
  • City bus line 2 to Knossos: third party guides say every 15 to 20 minutes, about 20 minutes, 1.30 euros bought in advance (Crete Immersion), or every 20 minutes at 1.70 euros (Crete Direct). Operator timetable not opened.
  • Other ferry operators: Ferryhopper (third party) also names Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways and Seajets on Piraeus to Heraklion, and ferries.gr (third party) says the ANEK sailing calls at Serifos and is run jointly with Blue Star Ferries. Their own pages were not opened.
  • UNESCO inscription date: third party pages give 12 July 2025 and 17 July 2025; the UNESCO decision page read on 7 Oct 2026 shows the session code 47 COM, not the day.
  • Distances: Agia Pelagia 24 km (Greeka) or 21 km (Karatarakis blog) from the city; Knossos about 5 km and Cretaquarium about 15 km east (third party guides only).
  • Historical Museum season edges: its hours page gives summer from 18 May and winter from November to April, so 1 to 17 May is not covered; its leaflet page says summer is May to October.
  • Bus to Cretaquarium: Crete Direct (third party) lists KTEL departures from Heraklion to Cretaquarium at about 3 euros; not checked on ktelherlas.gr.
  • 1866 Street market hours, Agios Minas visiting hours (Visit Heraklion says only 'throughout the day') and access to the Martinengo Bastion: no official hours found.
  • Amnissos as the harbour of ancient Knossos: stated by hotel and rental blogs only; the Ministry page for Amnissos was not opened.
