Free Things to Do
Greece is generous if you know when to turn up and where to look. These are the things that genuinely cost nothing anywhere in the country, with the official source where there is one.
Free admission days at state museums and sites
Entry to every state run archaeological site, monument and museum in Greece is free on these dates: 6 March, in memory of Melina Mercouri; 18 April, International Monuments Day; 18 May, International Museums Day; the last weekend of September for European Heritage Days; and 28 October, the national holiday. On top of that, entry is free on the first and third Sunday of the month, but only from 1 November to 31 March. There is no free Sunday between April and October, which catches a lot of people out in summer. It applies everywhere, the Acropolis, Delphi, Olympia, Knossos and Mycenae included.
Ministry of Culture, the official listUnder 25 and from the EU
If you are an EU citizen aged 25 or under, entry to state archaeological sites and museums is free all year on production of your ID or passport. Under 18s from outside the EU get the same. Worth knowing before you queue for a ticket.
Who qualifiesEvery beach in the country
Public access to the water is free by law on every Greek beach. Sunbeds and umbrellas are charged on the organised stretches, but there is almost always a free section alongside, and on the smaller islands most of the coastline is free throughout. The 2024 rules also require a clear corridor to the sea and a set proportion of every beach left unoccupied.
Village panigyria and the mountain paths
The saint’s day feast in a village square costs nothing to join, and the food is often free. So is the walking: the Vikos Gorge in Epirus, the old kalderimia between the Pelion villages, the Menalon Trail in Arcadia and the footpaths on almost every island are all open and unticketed.
