For Expats and Newcomers
Moving somewhere is not the same as visiting it. This is for people who live here, or are about to, and want a way in that is not another guided tour. Everything below is a real, currently active route to meeting people or learning something.
Meeting people
Meetup, Athens
The busiest thing going, and free to browse. Active groups include Athens International Friends at 4,677 members, Nomad Hub Greece at 2,557, Digital Nomads and Socialites in Athens at 2,415, Athens Conversation Exchange at 2,233 and Athens Brunch Club at 1,850, counted off Meetup's own Athens page on 3 September 2026. On a normal week there are social nights, game nights, karaoke, brunches, hikes on Hymettus, pickup basketball and boat trips out to Agistri and Aegina.
What is on this weekInterNations Athens
The more formal end of the expat scene, and not only for people who relocated for work: its own page welcomes anyone who came for work, love or adventure. That page counts 24,806 members in Athens, 23 events a month and 26 interest based groups, so expect several a week rather than one a month. Named groups include Arts and Culture, Food, Wine and Cocktail Lovers, and Great Outdoors and Indoors. Some events are members only.
Athens communityA note on meeting singles
The honest answer is that the mixed social nights work better than anything aimed explicitly at dating. The Thursday and Saturday socials, karaoke nights and brunch clubs are where people actually meet, because nobody is under pressure. Greek social life runs late, so a 21:30 start is normal rather than antisocial.
Language
Greek lessons
The Hellenic American Union runs Modern Greek courses for foreigners alongside its English and professional programmes, and is one of the longest established options in the city, founded in 1957. The Athens Centre is the other name people mention. It is in Mets, not Plaka, on Archimidous Street about fifteen minutes walk from Syntagma, and it was founded in 1969. Both run structured terms rather than drop in classes, and the Athens Centre runs its Modern Greek programme year round with classes averaging four to eight people.
Hellenic American UnionLanguage exchange
Free, and a fast way to get speaking practice, but check what a group actually practises before you go. Athens Conversation Exchange is the biggest one on Meetup at about 2,200 members, and it runs as SpeakDuo: the sessions are online rather than in a cafe, they ask for a camera, a microphone and intermediate English, and the language practised is English, not Greek. Each session is free and lasts an hour. For Greek itself the two schools above are the surer route.

Cooking classes
Athens has a deep bench of small cooking schools running half day classes, usually a market walk followed by cooking what you bought. Most run in English and take individuals rather than groups only. Book directly with the school where you can.
Wine tasting
Greek wine has changed beyond recognition in twenty years, and assyrtiko, xinomavro and agiorgitiko are the three to learn first. Tastings run in the city, and the Nemea vineyards are close enough for a day out. Harvest season, September into October, is the time to go.
Dancing
Greek dancing classes
Worth doing, and not just for tourists. Syrtos, kalamatianos and the island dances come up at every wedding, name day and panigyri, and knowing three steps changes how those evenings go. Look for classes at local cultural associations, which is where Greeks themselves learn.
Ideas and discussion
Socrates Cafe Athens
Open philosophical discussion, in English, and genuinely small at around fifty members. Two things worth knowing. The format is not an Athenian invention: Socrates Cafe began in 1996 with the American writer Christopher Phillips, and this group describes itself as inspired by that concept. Nor is it unstructured. Anyone may propose a question, the group votes on one, the proposer introduces it, and four house rules hold the evening together. Meetings are outdoors at Alsos Ilision, so bring something to sit on. There is still something quietly appropriate about arguing about the good life a short walk from where Socrates did it.
Next sessionBook and film clubs
Modern Books and Cinema Club pairs a book with its film adaptation and discusses both, in English, with about 738 members. The reading is modernist literature from the 1920s onwards, and short stories count as well as novels: a recent session took Daphne du Maurier's The Birds against Hitchcock's 1963 film. Recent meetings have run online.

Running, hiking and pickup sport
Founders Running Club meets on Saturday mornings, currently 09:00. There are pickup basketball games several nights a week. The SNFCC running track, outdoor gym included, is open daily from 6am to midnight and admission is free for all. It has an organised club and a kids' team: the SNFCC Running Team on Tuesday and Thursday at 19:30 and Saturday at 08:30, and the Kids Running Team on Saturday at 10:30. Hymettus and Parnitha are both within reach for hiking without a car.
Free activities at SNFCCGroups and courses checked 27 August 2026. The language, philosophy, book club, InterNations, Meetup and SNFCC entries were rechecked against each organisation's own page on 3 September 2026. Nothing here is a paid listing. Know somewhere better? Tell us.
