Sight

Monemvasia Castle

The Ministry of Culture says the town's presence on the rocky coast of the Peloponnese can be traced back to the 6th century AD. During the Slav incursions into the Peloponnese the rock was a refuge for Greeks from Laconia, and it became one of the main fortresses and trading centres of the Levant in the Middle Ages. Its position on the sea routes, its fleet and famous products such as Malvasia wine built the town's fame and prestige. The town's name, as Malvasia in Italian, Malvoisie in French and Malmsey in English, became known across Europe through its trade in a special wine, mainly imported from the Cyclades and Crete.

Outdoors: the path up, the walls and a swim

The voltes, the path to the Upper Town

The way up is a cobbled, snaking path that locals call the voltes. Travel.gr warns visitors to prepare for a hike. greece-is.com travel.gr

Along the seaward wall to the Portello

Medieval walls encircle the castle town. Greece Is suggests a walk along the seaward wall to the Portello sea gate, where you can swim in warm weather, then on to the gate of the eastern wall and the restored lighthouse. travel.gr greece-is.com

What to bring

Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat, sunglasses and water. Discover Greece lists these for its castle walking tour and advises avoiding roughly 12:00 to 17:00 in the summer heat. discovergreece.com

Eat and drink

Our venue cards for Monemvasia and Gefyra, with Google Maps, Tripadvisor and Review this place buttons, are on the Peloponnese food page:

Dishes and local products to try

  • Monemvasia Malvasia: Today's sweet Malvasia wine has PDO status as Monemvasia Malvasia, a blend of at least 51 percent Monemvassia grapes with Assyrtiko, Asproudes and Kydonitsa. discovergreece.com
  • Amygdalota and samousades: Local sweets to try include amygdalota, almond biscuits dusted with icing sugar, and samousades, nut filled pastry swirls drizzled with honey. discovergreece.com

Best time to go

Discover Greece recommends spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) for mild weather and fewer crowds. Summer is hot and busy, and in winter some businesses may keep limited hours. discovergreece.com

In recent years Easter has been kept like this (eKathimerini, 14 Apr 2025): on Holy Thursday the Service of the Holy Passion is held at the Church of Agios Nikolaos. On Good Friday the Epitaphios procession winds through the Lower Town from Panagia Chrysafitissa with the municipal philharmonic, then passes the castle gates to the modern part of town while boats in the harbour light lanterns. On Holy Saturday night the Resurrection service draws crowds to the square with the cannon outside Christ Elkomenos, or to Panagia Chrysafitissa. ekathimerini.com

Greece Is (5 Apr 2023) says firecrackers are banned in the town at Easter because it is a protected historical site, and a Judas effigy is usually burned on the afternoon of Easter Sunday in the courtyard of Chrysafitissa. greece-is.com

Liberation Day: the town was freed on 23 July 1821. In 2026 the 205th anniversary ran over 22 and 23 July with traditional dances, a service at Panagia Myrtidiotissa, a wreath laying in the square of Christ Elkomenos, the lighting of the rock, a drone show and a concert. Its centrepiece is the staging of the burning of a Turkish schooner, which the Municipality organises every year with the local fishing association (monemvasianews.gr, 24 Jul 2026). monemvasianews.gr
