Ioannina, the capital of Epirus, wraps around Lake Pamvotis, with a walled old town on a rocky promontory, a small island in the lake and a lively food scene. North of the city, 40 to 60 minutes away, the stone villages of Zagori, their bridges and paths, and the Vikos Gorge make up a cultural landscape inscribed by UNESCO in 2023. The two together suit a long weekend: museums and lakeside walks in town, slow lunches and short walks in the villages.
Every fact below comes from the 18 sources listed at the end, all read on 6 Oct 2026. Points we could not confirm are in their own box.
A short history
The Castle of Ioannina sits in the south east corner of the modern city on top of a rocky promontory and is the fortified old town. Greece lists it as an outstanding Byzantine monument and a protected archaeological site and historic place, and the Ministry of Culture calls it one of the largest fortification works of the Ali Pasha era: much of its present form dates from his rule, when rebuilding of the walls began in 1788.
Inside the walls there are two citadels. In the south east one, Its Kale, the building that now holds the Byzantine Museum was put up by the Greek army in 1958 on the site of a military hospital, itself built over the ruins of Ali Pasha's seraglio, which burned down in 1870. The museum has occupied its ground floor since 1995.
The deeper past is in the Archaeological Museum, designed by architect Aris Konstantinidis in the early 1960s. Its finds come from all over Epirus and run from the Lower Palaeolithic, about 250,000 years ago, to late Roman times, with a whole room for the sanctuary of Dodona, one of the most important oracles of the ancient Greek world.
In the mountains to the north, UNESCO inscribed the Zagori Cultural Landscape in 2023. The listing covers the way the villages, the stone architecture, the paths, stairways and bridges and the mountain setting work together, and the villages are still lived in.
What the city and the villages are like
Ioannina is a lake city: the town is built around Lake Pamvotis, and the island with its monasteries and the Ali Pasha museum makes a half day trip. The walled castle quarter, with its acropolis museums and mosques, gives the centre its historic core.
Silver is part of the city's identity. Silversmithing is described by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation as an integral part of the cultural heritage of Epirus, and its museum inside Its Kale tells the story from the 15th century onwards.
Zagori is a different world: stone villages, cobbled paths and old bridges in steep, green mountains. Locals and guides alike stress that it is a living place, not a stage set, so visitors are asked to park only where allowed and stay out of private courtyards.
Getting there
By air
Ioannina has its own airport, and AEGEAN sells direct flights between Athens and Ioannina on its official route page. Flight times and weekly frequency were not taken from an official timetable tonight.
KTEL Ioannina runs intercity coaches from its station at Leoforos Georgiou Papandreou 45, Ioannina. Its official site lists Ioannina to Athens at €46.20 and about 5 h 20 min, and Ioannina to Thessaloniki at €30.40 and about 3 h 30 min. Tickets can be bought at the station or online through the KTEL e ticket site; check the day's departures on the official timetable search.
From Athens: about 410 to 425 km, roughly 4 h 20 min to 5 h of driving without stops, depending on the route calculator. From Thessaloniki: about 261 to 262 km on the Egnatia motorway, roughly 2 h 45 min to 3 h 10 min. The Zagori villages are about 40 to 60 minutes north of Ioannina; a car gives real flexibility there because public connections are limited, and fuel stations are not found in every village.
In town, give the castle half a day: the Byzantine Museum with its Silverwork Treasury and the Fethiye Mosque exhibition on the city's late Ottoman history, the Silversmithing Museum in the west bastion of Its Kale, and then the Archaeological Museum near Plateia 25is Martiou. Add a boat trip to the island in the lake for the monasteries and the Ali Pasha museum.
A simple three day Zagori plan: Monodendri and views into the Vikos Gorge on day one, including the path to the monastery of Agia Paraskevi and, if the road and weather allow, the Oxya viewpoint; Vradeto, the Beloi viewpoint path and Aristi on day two; Megalo and Mikro Papigo on day three, with the Rogkovo rock pools (Kolymbithres or Ovires) between the two villages.
A full crossing of the Vikos Gorge is a proper mountain day that needs daylight, fitness, water, a clear route and fresh local advice, as do the climbs to the Astraka refuge and Drakolimni. Wet stones at the pools and on old paths are slippery, and the Voidomatis river is very cold even on sunny days.
Hours and ticket prices change by season; each museum card links to the official page we read on 6 Oct 2026.

The FNL Best Restaurant Awards 2026 say Ioannina has firmly joined the Greek food map, with an Epirus scene that puts local produce first, in both traditional and modern styles. The city's starred places that year included Thamon, which moved to new premises in the centre in April 2026, To Magazaki pou Legame and Silphion.
In Zagori, eating follows the route rather than a single best taverna: Monodendri works for an easy lunch, Vitsa for a slower dinner, Aristi for a practical stop on the north side and Papigo for a memorable evening. Ask which pie came out of the oven that day; pies, wild greens, local cheeses and herbs are the mark of a good kitchen, with mushrooms in autumn after rain.
For a lighter break between walks, a coffee and something sweet in a village such as Kapesovo fits the pace better than another full meal. Kitchens in small villages keep short hours on weekdays, so check on the day.
Each card on the mainland food page has Google Maps, Tripadvisor and Review this place buttons.
Best time to go
September suits Zagori well: the August crowds thin out, the light softens and temperatures are usually kinder for walking. It is still a mountain month, though, and a warm village square at noon can turn to chill, rain or fog within hours, so pack layers, a light waterproof and shoes with good grip.
Autumn is also mushroom season in the villages, after the first rains. In town, state museums switch to shorter winter hours from November to March and are closed on Tuesdays, and entry to state museums is free on the first Sunday of each month from 1 November to 31 March.
What we could not verify
Byzantine Museum hours: the Odysseus page prints 'Winter: 08:00 to 20:00, closed Tuesday', while the Directorate of Archaeological Museums says most museums run about 08:30 to 15:30 from November to March; current hours not confirmed.
Combined ticket: the Odysseus Byzantine Museum page gives €5 full and €3 reduced, but the Odysseus Archaeological Museum page gives €10 full and €5 reduced for the same combined ticket (Archaeological Museum, Byzantine Museum, Dodona); the Directorate page shows €5 for the Byzantine Museum. Which is current is unclear.
Archaeological Museum winter hours are not published on the Odysseus page.
Silversmithing Museum hours and prices come from Visit Greece; the museum's own PIOP page was read but its hours section was not seen.
Boats to the island, their timetable and fares, and the Ali Pasha museum's hours and tickets were not read on any official page.
The Zagori UNESCO year (2023) comes from the E Prosfores article, which cites the Ministry; the UNESCO page itself was not opened.
Driving figures differ between calculators: Athens 410.1 km and 4 h 44 min (apostasi.gr), 411 km and 4 h 18 min (vriskoapostasi.gr), 425 km and 5 h (Travelo); Thessaloniki 261.8 km and 3 h 6 min (apostasi.gr) or 261 km and 2 h 46 min (vriskoapostasi.gr). Athens route tolls also differ (€22 in Travelo, €44.70 in vriskoapostasi.gr).
KTEL fares and journey times are from the 'popular destinations' panel on the KTEL Ioannina home page; the day by day timetable did not render as text, so departure times are not given. The Athens arrival station was not confirmed.
Air: no official flight schedule or flight time was read; only the AEGEAN route page.
The 40 to 60 minutes between Ioannina and Zagori is from zagori.app and depends on which village.
