Hellenic Train
Kalambaka has a station on the Hellenic Train network: the operator's live departures page lists Kalambaka on lines C2 and G3, the same codes as Trikala, and line C2 is also listed at Athens; Palaiofarsalos appears on C1, C2 and G3. Hellenic Train also has a station page for Kalambaka Meteora. Whether a direct train runs from Athens, and its times, were not confirmed on a Hellenic Train page, so use the journey planner on hellenictrain.gr (see What we could not verify, below). hellenictrain.gr hellenictrain.gr

Kalambaka
Visit Greece describes Kalambaka as built at the foot of the Meteora rocks on the left bank of the Pinios, on the site of the ancient city of Aeginion, known in the Middle Ages as Stagi, and today the gateway to Meteora. The town has the KTEL bus station (at K. Oikonomou and Averof, per KTEL notices of 2021), a Hellenic Train station and the Natural History Museum, and the monastery bus started here in 2022. visitgreece.gr kalabakacity.gr hellenictrain.gr visitgreece.gr trikalaidees.gr
Kastraki
Kastraki lies about 1.5 km from Meteora and 2 km from Kalambaka (in.gr, 4 Sep 2024); mythessaly.gr (27 Mar 2026) places it beside Kalambaka, about 25 km from Trikala, with old footpaths leading from the village up to the monasteries. The 2022 monastery bus route ran through the village. in.gr mythessaly.gr trikalaidees.gr
Places to stay here: campsites: the April 2022 KTEL monastery bus route stopped at two campsites, Vrachos and Boufidis, on the way from Kalambaka through Kastraki (trikalaidees.gr), UNESCO notes that camping accounts for much of the visitor pressure on the site. Facts only; no hotel, star rating or price checked. See Where to stay and Rentals for prices and booking advice.
Opening hours, closures and ticket prices change by season: each card links to the official page we read on 8 Oct 2026, so check it again before you go.

Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron (Megalo Meteoro)
Founded in about 1340, the Great Meteoron keeps, to the left of its entrance, the cave hermitage of its founder St Athanasios of Meteora, now a chapel; a new main church (katholikon) was completed in 1544/45, and the old infirmary of 1572 is now a museum of icons, manuscripts and sacred treasures, including icons of the 13th century (official site). Visiting hours on the monastery's own page: summer, 1 Apr to 31 Oct, 09:30 to 15:00 every day except Tuesday; winter, 1 Nov to 31 Mar, 09:30 to 14:00 on Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday only, closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It also stays closed on 5, 6 and 7 August, on 30 September and 1 October, and from 1 to 28 February, and warns that the schedule can change by decision of the monastery. The Municipality of Meteora prints the same hours and gives the phone as +30 24320 22278. Dress code: see Practical notes, below.

Holy Monastery of Varlaam
The Municipality of Meteora lists Varlaam open 09:00 to 16:00 in summer and 09:00 to 15:00 in winter, every day except Friday (phone +30 24320 22277); some guides add a second winter closing day (see What we could not verify, below). The municipal page calls it the second great monastery of Meteora: the rock was first settled around the middle of the 14th century by the hermit Varlaam, who built a small church of the Three Hierarchs and a few cells, and the monastery keeps a rich collection of manuscripts, icons and relics, with the old refectory, the kitchen and the old hospital among its buildings. UNESCO recalls the net in which pilgrims were once hoisted up the 373 m cliff where Varlaam dominates the valley.

Byzantine church of the Dormition of the Virgin, Kalambaka
religiousgreece.gr calls it the most important church in Kalambaka and the cathedral of the old bishopric of Stagi: a large three aisled middle Byzantine basilica, built in the 10th or early 11th century over an early Christian basilica whose mosaic floor partly survives. Frescoes of the 12th century remain at the east end of the south aisle, while the rest of the church was painted in 1573 by the priest Kyriazis and Neophytos, son of the Cretan painter Theophanes. The tall marble ambo in the middle of the nave, rebuilt mainly from the ambo of the early Christian church, is described as the only surviving example of an ambo standing in the middle of a church, and the north wall of the inner narthex carries a chrysobull of 1336 in which Emperor Andronikos III confirmed the bishopric's privileges and bounds. The Ephorate of Antiquities of Trikala is the protecting body. Opening hours were not confirmed (see What we could not verify, below).

Natural History Museum of Meteora and Mushroom Museum, Kalambaka
Two museums share about 1,100 m2 in Kalambaka: a zoological section with more than 350 species of birds and mammals, and a mushroom section with about 250 species, sculpted to match real mushrooms in colour and size and shown at three stages of growth, all set in dioramas of their habitats (Municipality of Meteora; the museum's own site). Visit Greece calls the mushroom section the first of its kind in Greece and says the shop sells the museum's own mushroom products, such as pasta, soups, truffle pastes and mushrooms in oil; the museum also runs truffle hunts, including on horseback, and its Nights at the Museum events, and has a café facing the rocks. Visit Greece lists tickets at 7 euros general and 5 euros reduced; phone +30 24320 24959. Hours and the street number differ between sources (see What we could not verify, below).

Theopetra Cave
The cave opens on the north east side of a limestone outcrop in the village of Theopetra, about 4 km from Kalambaka: an arched entrance 17 by 3 m leads into roughly 500 m2. Excavations from 1987 to 2007 showed people using it from the Middle Palaeolithic, 130,000 years ago, to the Neolithic, around 4000 BC, one of very few sites in Greece that record the move from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic way of life; finds include Palaeolithic and Mesolithic burials and rare human footprints about 130,000 years old (Ministry of Culture). After rockfall protection works the cave reopened in spring 2025, daily except Tuesday, 08:30 to 15:30 (Archaeology Newsroom, 3 Apr 2025). The Ministry page gives the same hours, closed every Tuesday, and a ticket of 5 euros full or 3 euros reduced that also covers the Theopetra Cave Documentation and Education Centre, where selected finds are shown.

The rocks of Meteora
UNESCO describes sandstone peaks rising over 400 m above ground level, formed about 60 million years ago from river delta deposits and later shaped by earthquakes, rain and wind into spectacular forms, in an area of exceptional natural beauty; Meteora is also part of the Natura 2000 network (GR1440003). UNESCO's geopark page puts the columns at up to 300 m high and dates the uplift and faulting that shaped them to over 5 million years ago (see What we could not verify, below for the differing figures). whc.unesco.org unesco.org
Meteora Pyli UNESCO Global Geopark
UNESCO designated the geopark in 2024. It covers about 2,409.5 km2 of the municipalities of Meteora and Pyli in western Thessaly (geopark site), and UNESCO's page points to the slender Adrachti rock and the honeycomb tafoni formations near Kalambaka, and says the geopark supports hiking trails and climbing routes. The geopark's news on 2 and 6 Oct 2026 shows it active this autumn. Rules for rock climbing were not found on an official page (see What we could not verify, below). unesco.org meteorapyligeopark.gr

The Natural History Museum in Kalambaka has a café looking out to the rocks and a shop of wild mushroom products made under the museum's own label (Municipality of Meteora, 2015; Visit Greece).
Αρχονταρίκι in central Kalambaka took winter and summer breaks in 2026 (closed from 8 Jan until shortly before Carnival, and from 29 Jun to 9 Jul), so check before going (kalabakacity.gr notices).
In Trikala, about 25 km from Kastraki (mythessaly.gr), the pedestrian Asklipiou street gathers shops with local products, and growers sell fruit, vegetables, honey and cheese at the street market every Tuesday and Saturday (in2life, 1 Sep 2025).
The monasteries keep a summer timetable from 1 Apr to 31 Oct and a winter one from 1 Nov to 31 Mar. From 1 Nov 2026 Great Meteoron opens only Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 09:30 to 14:00, and it closes for the whole of February; the other houses shorten their hours (see Practical notes, below). meteoromonastery.gr dimosmeteoron.com
