Practical Info

Everything you need to know before and during your trip to Greece.

Shop Opening Hours

Most independent shops open around 09:00 and close at 14:00 or 15:00. Many then reopen from about 17:30 to 21:00 on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday only. On Monday, Wednesday and Saturday they often close at 15:00 and do not reopen. Supermarkets, chains and anything in a tourist area usually run straight through, and most close on Sunday.

The Afternoon Quiet, Siesta

The afternoon quiet, mesimeri, runs roughly 15:00 to 17:30. It is not a formal rule but it is widely observed, especially in villages and residential streets. Shops shut, people rest, and there is a legal quiet period covering noise. Avoid phoning anyone, ringing a doorbell or running power tools then, and plan sightseeing or a long lunch instead.

Banks, Pharmacies and Museums

Banks open Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 14:30 and Friday 08:00 to 14:00, and close at weekends. Pharmacies follow shop hours but a rota keeps one open overnight and at weekends in every area, posted on the door. Museums and archaeological sites often have shorter winter hours from November to March.

Public and Bank Holidays

Fixed dates: 1 January, 6 January, 25 March, 1 May, 15 August, 28 October, 25 and 26 December. Moving dates follow the Orthodox calendar: Clean Monday 15 March 2027, Good Friday 30 April 2027, Easter Sunday 2 May 2027, Easter Monday 3 May 2027 and Whit Monday 21 June 2027. On these days most shops, banks and public offices close, transport runs a reduced service, and the days either side get very busy.

Emergency Numbers

Save these before you need them: 112 (EU emergency, English speaking, free of charge, and the same line that sends the emergency text alerts), 100 (police, and you can send it a free SMS if you cannot speak), 199 (fire brigade), 166 (ambulance, EKAB), 108 (coast guard), 1571 (tourist police, not 171), 10400 (ELPA roadside assistance). Greece's own national list adds 1056 for child protection, 116000 for missing children and 116111 for a children and teenagers helpline.

The Hellenic Parliament building on Syntagma Square in Athens

Tourist Police & Safety

The Tourist Police line is 1571, not 171. 1571 is the number the Hellenic Police list themselves, it runs 24 hours, and it is answered in Greek, English, French and German. It exists to sort out the problems tourists run into, so scams, disputes and lost documents. For a lost or stolen passport, report to the police first, then contact your embassy, most are based in Athens.

Health: hospitals, health centres and pharmacies

In any emergency call 112. It is free from any phone and the operators speak English. For an ambulance call 166 (EKAB).

Emergency and health lines

  • 112 European emergency number: For any emergency, 24 hours a day, free from any landline or mobile, even without credit. Operators speak at least Greek, English and French and pass your call to the ambulance (EKAB), police, fire service or coast guard. You can also send an SMS to 112. gov.gr (page read, read 4 Oct 2026)
  • 166 EKAB ambulance (National Centre for Emergency Care): Ambulance and urgent medical help, free of charge. Give the town or village, the exact address and a nearby landmark. • 1434 Hospitals on duty information line: The Ministry of Health says this line tells you which hospitals are on duty. It is not a pharmacy line. For a medical emergency call 166 or 112. moh.gov.gr (page read, read 4 Oct 2026)

Which hospital is on duty

In Athens (Attica) and Thessaloniki the public hospitals take turns to be on duty. On any day only the hospitals on duty take new emergency patients, usually from 08:00 to 08:00 the next morning. The Ministry of Health posts a daily list for Attica and a list for Thessaloniki; check it before you go, or call 166. Hospitals in other cities with two hospitals, such as Heraklion, Larissa and Ioannina, also alternate, and Nafplio alternates with Argos. Many hospital websites show on the home page whether the hospital is on duty today. Rethymno hospital, the only one in its prefecture, and Santorini hospital say they are on duty every day.

Pharmacies on duty at night and at weekends

Pharmacies take turns to stay open in the evening, at night and at weekends. The local pharmaceutical associations publish the lists, for example in Attica and Thessaloniki, and in Attica every pharmacy must display the table of pharmacies with extended hours in its window. Use the official finders below: the Pharmaceutical Association of Attica map for Athens and Attica, and the National Electronic Health Record page, which links to lists for Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa, Volos, Kalamata, Crete, the Cyclades and Lesvos. Some hospital websites, such as Naxos and Kalamata, also link to the local pharmacies on duty. No official national phone line for pharmacies on duty was found.

Health centres on islands without a hospital

EHIC, GHIC and insurance

EU visitors: carry your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and your ID card or passport. With it you use the Greek public system (ESY hospitals and health centres) on the same terms as people insured in Greece, and treatment in public hospitals is free. Without the card you pay 20 euros for a consultation at a public outpatient clinic, plus any other services you need. Ambulance transport by EKAB (166 or 112) to a public hospital on duty is free. In private hospitals with an EOPYY contract you pay part of the cost; private hospitals without a contract are not covered. For prescribed medicines you usually pay 25 percent. UK visitors: the UK government says you need a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or a UK EHIC for medically necessary state healthcare in Greece. Neither card replaces travel insurance, which should also cover medical evacuation.

What we could not verify yet (17 points)
  • Pharmacies on duty phone line: no official national phone line was found. The Ministry of Health describes 1434 only as a line about hospitals on duty, so do not present it as a pharmacy line.
  • 1434: the Ministry of Health page does not say whether the line also covers areas outside Attica.
  • Ministry of Health lists of hospitals on duty exist only for Attica and Thessaloniki. The Attica page was opened today; the Thessaloniki subpage could not be opened, only its link on the index page was seen.
  • Evangelismos: the hospital's own website could not be opened today. Address and phone come from the 1st Health Region list; emergency_department left null.
  • HYGEIA (private): no official page opened today gives the street address (only directories do), so address is null; emergency_department null.
  • Interbalkan Medical Center (private): the hospital's own website could not be opened. Address and phone come from the contact page of the group's International Oncology Center (interonco.gr); emergency_department null.
  • Kos: the hospital's own website could not be opened, so website is null. Address and phone +302242054258 are as listed by the 2nd Health Region and may not be the main switchboard; emergency_department null.
  • Santorini: the hospital website gives +302286035300, while the 2nd Health Region list gives +302286360300. The hospital's own number is used.
  • Naxos: the 2nd Health Region list shows a malformed number (22853060500); +302285360500 from the hospital website is used. emergency_department null.
  • Rhodes and Zakynthos: the pages opened do not mention an emergency department, so emergency_department is null.
  • Corfu and Kalamata: emergency_department set to true from indirect wording on the hospitals' own pages (an outpatient and emergencies desk in Corfu, emergency examination certificates in Kalamata).
  • Health centres of Mykonos, Paros and Milos: 24 hour emergency cover not confirmed, so emergency_department is null. No official source on the usual transfer route for serious cases was found; only the EU guidance that air ambulance requests go through EKAB on 166 is used.
  • Chania and Kefalonia: the pages opened give no postcode, so the addresses have none.
  • Fire Service 199: confirmed on the gov.gr 112 page; the Fire Service's own website was not opened.
  • Poison Centre: no street address is given because no official page opened today states it.
