Kalamata, the capital of Messinia, is a working seaside city between Mount Taygetos and the Messinian Gulf, with a Frankish castle above its old town, a long waterfront walk and a marina. Its name travels the world on its olives, and the plain around it feeds a strong food scene. South along the coast the Outer Mani begins, with Kardamyli and Stoupa set between the mountains and the sea, while Ancient Messene, one of the best preserved ancient cities in Greece, is under an hour inland. It suits travellers who want a real Greek city with beaches close by, food lovers, and anyone heading on to the Mani villages; it is not a resort island.
KTEL Messinias runs Athens to Kalamata coaches every day, both express runs and runs via the Isthmus and Tripoli, as listed on its Athens route page. Rome2rio puts the trip at about three hours from the Kifisos KTEL coach station in Athens. Check the live timetable and buy tickets on the operator site before travelling. ktelmessinias.grrome2rio.com
The same route page lists a line from Athens via Kalamata to Kardamyli, Stoupa, Agios Nikolaos, Agios Nikon and Itilo, with the connection made in Kalamata, and the matching return line. Frequencies are low, so check times on the operator site. ktelmessinias.gr
